OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was implemented to examine whether electronic books are suitable for patients with low vision by comparing and electronic book with a reading chart (MNREAD-J). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The critical character size and the maximum reading speed were measured using the reading chart Also, reading speeds with characters bigger than the critical character size were compared using the lectronic book and the reading chart. Two subjects were studied: Petient 1, who has amblyopia without visual field loss and Patient 2, who has central visual field loss. RESULETS: Reading speeds were 237.0±75.7(characters/min) with the reasing chart and 247.±49.2(characters/min) with the electronic book(p=0.78) for patient1, and 83.8±45.7(characters/min) with the reading chart and 79.4±24.2(characters/min) with the electronic book (p=0.85) for Patient2; there was no significant difference between the values for the electronic book and the reading chart in either patient. CONCLUSIONS: The electronic book was equal to the MNREAD for the parameters studied, and the display settings of the electronic book were reasonable. More detailed studies with a greater number of subjects will be necessary in the future.
